Backing yardage tries both piecing directions and shows the cheaper one, adds 1" per seam, and rounds up to the next 1/8 yard. Binding = (length + width) × 2 + 10" overlap; strips assume ~40" usable width after trimming selvedges, less one strip-width per join. When in doubt, buy one extra strip's worth.
